St. Leonard Church

The church is dedicated to St. Leonard and has more than 400 years of history inside it. It was first built around 1500 and then enlarged in 1760 and then vastly improved in the 19th Century. The interior of the Church holds several paintings by Ġużè Briffa.

The church is situated in St Leonard Square.

Opening Hours: Daily: 6am – 9am and 4pm – 6.30pm

 

Annunciation Chapel

The chapel is very old. It was constructed in 1460 and then rebuilt in 1658. This chapel can be found in Kirkop Square and is still being used for special functions.

The chapel is situated in Misraħ Kirkop.

Opening hours: Open daily, this chapel serves as an adoration chapel for the Holy Host

 

Paleochristian Catacombs

The Paleochristan era tombs and small catacombs were found in several parts of the village in 1962. It was calculated that these were dug in the 4th or 5th century AD. Many were destroyed or buried again, and now only two can be visited. They are found in Triq taż-Żebbiegħ.

Ruins of Chapel of St. James Apostle
The entrance arch of the old Chapel of St. James Apostle still remains here. The ruins are found in Triq San Gwann c/w Triq Dun Ġużepp Barbara.

Opening hours: This site is closed for the time being, but the entrance can be seen from the street.

 

St. Nicholas Cemetery

The cemetery, as part of St. Nicholas’ church was rebuilt in the 17th Century. In the cemetery one finds a lot of graves of those who died in the great plague in 1592.

The cemetry is found in Triq San Nikola.

The Menhir

The Menhir is an erect stone slab that stands about 3 metres high. This is one of the three which are still in good shape in Malta. It was erected during ancient times, although it is still a mystery as to why it was erected. Experts agree that it was used as a place where rulers of the time used to meet. It has since become the symbol of Kirkop.

The Menhir is found in Triq San Pietru c/w Triq Valletta.

Opening hours: Public place, so it can be seen at any time. It is located in a very small open garden.

 

St. Joseph Band Club

St Joseph Band Club was established in 1886 by Dun Guzepp Barbara as an extension of the Confraternity of St Joseph which saw its beginning eight years earlier.  The idea behind this society  was to organise the external festivities in honour of St. Joseph.  This is done through street decorations, band marches and fireworks.  Various sub-committees make part of this non governmental organisation.

St Joseph Band Club is situated in Triq il-Parroċċa.

Opening hours: Evenings during the week and full days on weekends

 

St. Leonard Band Club

St Leonard Band Club was established in 1858. It is a voluntary organisation which together with the church helps in the organisation of the feast of St Leonard. This is done through the arts as manifested in monumental street decorations, music, through brass band concerts, pyrotechnic shows and a community radio station. Various sub-committees make part of this non governmental organisation.

Kirkop United Football Club

Kirkop United Football Club was founded 1956 as Kirkop F.C. by the founder Mr. Clement Farrugia and was affiliated to the Malta Amateur Football Association. In 1957 Kirkop F.C. joined the Malta Football Association, taking part in Third Division. Within the Kirkop United Football Club there is also the Kirkop United Women Football Club, Youth Nursery Section and the Youth Nursery Girls Section.
